| Bought the newer S301. Works great, picture is spectacular. One word of caution the 1080p resolution is available only with the newer HDMI cables. Check your set before you buy. It will output 720i with the component setup. This picture still looks very very good. The unit will automatically upgrade the signal depending what your TV will allow. It definitely improves regular DVD's as well. There are firmware upgrades that may be necessary. The download instructions were confusing from Sony. You need to burn a DVD with the file that is downloaded. Alteratively the disc can be ordered directly from Sony's website and ships free of charge in 24 hours. There is a 5 disc promotion until Feb.'08 with 5 free Blu-Ray movies, but the selection is limited. Overall very satisfied with the machine. |

Sony BDP-S300 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player
It's a great player. I got Spiderman free along with the player. Played it after updating the firmware provided free from the Sony website (they mailed in 3 days). The picture was very clear, the startup was slow initially but not that slow (perhaps it was an update).
The sound quality using a HDMI cable is great, clear. |
Nice, but not perfect

Another nice product from Sony. Which, for me, means good quality but I'm still a bit underwhelmed.
The sound quality is great, just like a DVD.
Picture quality is super, but not much better than upscaled DVD. Of course, it could just be the few movies I've watched so far. Though, the detail of animated movies is awesome.
Price is a too high, but that will probably decrease in time.
Startup time is awful; it takes at least 60 to 90 seconds to "boot". Nowadays, it seems waiting for technology is the norm - mobile phones, TVs, surround sound, video game consoles, whatever.
I was real anxious about getting a Blu-Ray player; as I've had a HDTV for a couple of years, but no HD source. Now I can say I've seen HD in my own home. It's nice, real nice.
But, this is 2008 and I would think HD quality should be fairly commonplace; instead of a premium priced upgrade/option. Oh well, I guess we all will have to remain patient while we wait... |
A Fine High-End Player

| The setup manual is a bit complicated because the player accommodates so many inputs, but it works great when you get it going. It's remarkable how much it improves the appearance of regular DVD's. |

| The Sony BDP-S300 player is a great Blue-ray Disk player. It's pretty basic as far as bells an whistles go but thats exactly what I was looking for. I wanted a Blue-ray player to use with my New HDTV but I did not want to spend a lot of money on something that is still fairly new and bound to have much better and cheaper players in another year or two. The BDP-S300 plays beautifully on my Sony Bravia 52 inch 1080p LCD HDTV. I rented Pirates of The Caribbean: At Word's End from Netflix since I keep reading about how people have had problems with the new Interactive features and Menu in it, not to mention it looked like a great movie and I wanted to see it. At first my BDP-S300 choked bad and would basically stop running, the menus were non responsive and the load time was over 10 minutes, but after a little googleing and research I found that a firmware upgrade might help, so thats what I did, Went to the Sony website downloaded the newest firmware (3.7), burned it to a DVD and popped it in the player, the upgrade worked perfectly and now the movie rungs great, with no problems at all, and a load time of a bout a minute and a half. It came with Firmware version 2.4 I think so they must have made some good changes up to 3.7. |
